Responsible Enterprises in the 21st Century - Synergistic Development of Innovation and Ecology
2025-02-26
Environmental challenges remain a significant issue on the global agenda. Climate change, air pollution, and water pollution highlight the need for urgent action to address environmental problems caused by human activities. However, today's environmental problems require solutions that go beyond single-issue, localized approaches. To achieve sustainable development, it is insufficient to achieve complete environmental neutrality in only one stage of production (whether energy consumption or emission reduction). Only a comprehensive approach covering all stages, from using renewable energy to waste recycling and modernization of production facilities, can ensure effectiveness.
As one of the world's largest aluminum producers, Rusal actively employs a comprehensive approach to implementing environmental programs. This includes not only minimizing the impact on air, water, and soil, but also encompasses the introduction of advanced technologies, biodiversity protection, waste management, and carbon footprint reduction.
Driving Environmental Transformation Through Innovation
Rusal is introducing modern technologies to reduce the environmental impact of its smelters. At the Krasnoyarsk and Bratsk aluminum smelters, the company has installed the RA-550 pre-baked anode production system. This technology completely eliminates the emission of benzo(a)pyrene and reduces fluoride emissions by 70%. The new plant equipped with the RA-550 system operates more efficiently and environmentally friendly, meeting international standards.

EcoSoderberg technology helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions by reducing the frequency and duration of anode effects. The use of environmentally friendly low-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pitch reduces benzo(a)pyrene emissions by 100 times, significantly improving air quality. In recent years, the Bratsk aluminum smelter has reduced pollutant emissions by 8.4% through these measures. Modernized gas purification systems and environmentally friendly pitch contribute to improving the environmental situation in the area surrounding the smelter.
As part of its sustainable development strategy, the company plans to reduce specific greenhouse gas emissions per tonne of metal by 30% (excluding neutralization) or 57% (including neutralization) by 2035 compared to 2018 levels. This goal will be achieved through the company's complete transition to carbon-free energy, the introduction of closed-cycle production, and improved energy efficiency.
A significant innovative R&D achievement of the company is ALLOW INERTA primary aluminum, created by company experts in 2017, which has the lowest global carbon footprint. Its production uses inert anode technology, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions during the electrolysis process. ALLOW INERTA aluminum is produced at the pilot plant of Rusal's Krasnoyarsk aluminum smelter. The first batches of metal were delivered in 2021 to several major companies in the energy, automotive, and electronics industries. During the pilot testing of this technology, more than 4400 tonnes of ALLOW INERTA were produced.
